In this phase, Dr. Liu Chang, a lecturer from HSS, invited students to time travel to get a glimpse of single women’s residences in Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s. As modernization and industrialization came at a rapid pace, women's changing social roles spawned the emergence of Shanghai women's apartments - a symbol of status in the up-and-coming cosmopolitan city. More profoundly, it also redefined the ethics and order of the public living space. Comparing the past with the current housing situation for women in terms of limited options, difficulties, and potential risks of living alone, the speaker concluded that more needs to be done to safeguard female personal space.

After introducing the basics of the Cantonese pronunciation rules, the speaker walked the students through six development stages of Cantopop songs and their respective golden oldies, from “Eiffel Tower Above the Clouds” to “Boundless Oceans Vast Skies” to “The Wind Blows On,” offering a few glimpses of the highly cosmopolitan city’s evolution over nearly a century.
Harmonia Evening Talks Phase 19 | Another side of the metropolis: A geology field trip in Hong Kong
Harmonia Evening Talks phase 19 took place as scheduled on the evening of October 14, 2022. Professor Zuo Xuran delivered a lively and engaging presentation on Hong Kong's country parks and geoparks, leading the students to explore another side of the bustling city.
Combining her own experiences of observing monkeys at Chengmen Reservoir, enjoying the seaside views along the MacLehose Trail, exploring the Back Garden of Victoria Peak, and embracing the Lion Rock spirit, Professor Zuo vividly showcased the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Hong Kong's outskirts. Drawing from her years of mountaineering experience, Professor Zuo also introduced her personal selection of the most remarkable geopark attractions in Hong Kong: Man Yee Reservoir, Tung Ping Chau, Kiu Tsui Chau, and Shun Hing Chau. In addition, she led everyone on a "virtual tour" to Wong Chuk Kok Tsui, Chek Chau, Po Toi Island, and Ma Shi Chau where they marveled at the unique red conglomerate rocks, stone carvings, pudding-like rock structures, marine fossils, and the Buddha's Hand Rock.

Professor Huang brought a selection of collections and pictorial books on ancient coins, providing a vibrant discussion on the art of collecting ancient coins.

On the evening of March 26, 2023, Harmonia Evening Talks phase 20 had the honor of inviting Professor Huang Yongshun from HSS to deliver a lecture titled "The World of Ancient Chinese Coins." Professor Huang brought a selection of collections and pictorial books on ancient coins, providing a vibrant discussion on the art of collecting ancient coins.
Ancient coin collecting encompasses not only the study of numismatics but also the fields of archaeology and museology, and history. Due to the unique function of money as a medium of exchange, ancient coins not only represent the coinage standards of a particular dynasty but also reflect the economic environment, government finances, and even the political and military situations of different historical periods. Following the timeline of dynastic changes, Professor Huang provided a detailed introduction to the mainstream or distinctive coins of various Chinese dynasties. He also delved into the background and value of these coins in terms of their historical significance and collectability.
