Harmonia Evening Talks Phase Ⅵ | Interdisciplinary Humanities and English Academic Writing

Dr. Liu Kuan-yen, Lecturer of HSS, shared his learning experiences in the departments of English, Philosophy, Chinese (East Asian) and History during his undergraduate and doctoral study, and briefly discussed the research topics and methodologies in various fields of humanities. After sharing overseas and domestic teaching experiences and explaining English academic writing skills, he invited the audience to discuss how the humanities and academic writing training may “enlarge” or “limit” our horizons. During the lecture, two student speakers also presented their term papers and shared their thoughts and experiences of paper writing.

Ms. Tina Wu, Associate Strategy Director of Ping An Technology, also the wife of Professor Shuai Ye, warden of Harmonia College, shared how to become a masterful consultant: learn fast; develop structured thinking; be articulate; increase your EQ. She then offered suggestions on how to get into the consulting field: sharpen teamwork skills in leadership positions in student organizations; develop extensive soft skills; intern more at top companies; get a higher GPA. To make one's resume stand out, the speaker emphasized quantifying and highlighting accomplishments by using more precise numbers that offer a clearer representation of one's value, instead of a dry and vague laundry list of job duties from the internship.

He articulated his reasons for working in the financial sector and shared 12 years of working experience in the field with our students. The speaker also analyzed what qualities and characteristics fresh graduates need to process to get into the field and provided valuable job-hunting advice.
